Harvesting Hope on Panarea:

"Jehnny and Derek's Sustainable Micro-Farm Oasis"

Jehnny and Derek established an innovative micro-farm on the untamed island of Panarea, nestled in Sicily, Italy's Aeolian archipelago. This unique island, deprived of ample freshwater sources, relies heavily on shipments for clean water due to minimal rainfall, especially during scorching summers. To combat this scarcity, they devised a rainwater harvesting system, ensuring a sustainable water supply. Employing aquaponics, they maintain water health while conserving significant amounts. Their efforts also attract a diverse array of animals, fostering a rich biodiversity on the island.

"Isle of Dreams:

A Sustainable Odyssey on Panarea's Enchanted Shores"

OOnce upon a time on the enchanting island of Panarea in Sicily, Italy, Jehnny and Derek embarked on an extraordinary journey. This wild island, kissed by the Mediterranean Sea, posed a unique challenge — water scarcity. Almost all the clean water had to be brought in by ships, especially during the rainless, scorching summers.  Undeterred by the island's water woes, Jehnny and Derek set out to build something extraordinary — an experimental micro-farm that would not only thrive in this waterless landscape but also contribute to the island's sustainability. Their tale begins with a dream of transforming a rugged piece of land into a haven of simplicity, love for nature, and a sanctuary for animals.

In the late '90s, Derek, a yacht commander, and Jehnny stumbled upon Panarea during a voyage to Greece. The island's magnetic charm captured their hearts, and from that moment, their travels were forever directed towards Panarea. Their dream took root when Derek discovered a dilapidated structure during a walk around Punta Milazzese. It was a ruin, once a shelter for animals, now abandoned and in shambles.  Undeterred by the challenges, Derek, almost like a modern-day pioneer, envisioned turning this ruin into a place of beauty and sustainability. The transformation was no small feat — from carrying 50 kg of cement on his back in his younger days to the present, where the farm is sustained by solar power and rainwater. The farm, a family of donkeys, cats, chickens, and more, became a testament to their unwavering dedication.

Panarea, with its mild winter climate and breathtaking landscapes, offered a canvas for their dreams. Their love for the island extended beyond their farm; it became a commitment to permaculture and a desire to share their knowledge.  The farm, named Villa Libertà, was not just a project; it was a labor of love that echoed their values. As they invited volunteers through Workaway, they sought kindred spirits willing to embrace an active lifestyle, a love for animals, and a passion for sustainable living.  As Jehnny and Derek's story unfolds, it becomes a testament to the resilience of the human spirit, the beauty of nature, and the magic that happens when dreams meet determination. The island of Panarea, with its rugged charm, becomes a character in this story, shaping the lives of those who choose to call it home.
